While the riders of the Tour de France 2024 will climb the formidable Col de la Bonette, at an altitude of 2,800 meters, those of the Tour of Spain 2025 or 2026 might push back the field of possibilities.
Negotiations are underway so that Pico Veleta, whose summit is judged to be almost 3,400 meters, will soon host a La Vuelta stage finish. Part of the Sierra Nevada massif (Andalusia), this pass had already been used in part on the Tour of Spain 2017 and 2022… but up to 2,500 meters above sea level.
42.4 km at 6.5%
In total, this climb is 42.4 kilometers long, with an average percentage of 6.5%, of which the first 41 are asphalted before paths to go up to 3,398 meters high.
“To date, we do not have the necessary permissions from the authorities. We respect that but we continue to work to organize the highest finish in history,” explains Javier Guillen, the director of the event, in comments relayed by Cycle 21.
