In South Africa, some men cause a bloodbath in a township, six people die. The gang is believed to have been trying to get their leader’s ID back. The manhunt for the killers is on.

Violent criminals have killed six people in South Africa in connection with a lost ID card. According to their own statements, the police launched a large-scale search for at least four men. They stormed a house in a township near the city of Durban on Friday evening and killed four people there. Two other people were shot dead in a hut in the neighborhood.

Initial investigations indicated that the suspected gang leader asked the victims for their ID before shooting them, police spokesman Robert Netshiunda said. “He was likely involved and is wanted by police for another murder in which he appears to have lost his ID,” the police spokesman said. According to press reports, the leader assumed that one of the victims was in possession of his identity document.

Gun attacks are widespread in South Africa, the country has one of the highest homicide rates in the world, and it has risen sharply again in the last year. A British doctor was shot dead in Cape Town last week when he took a wrong turn in a car and got caught up in a violent taxi drivers’ strike.
