Toyota Motor Corporation, the Japanese auto giant, said, on Wednesday, that it has resumed production at its factories, after completely shutting down operations in Japan during the past 24 hours.

Toyota said operations had initially resumed at 25 production lines at 12 of Japan’s 14 assembly plants. The remaining 28 production lines will resume operations later Wednesday.

On Tuesday, a technical problem led to a complete halt to production. Toyota said it had replaced the faulty system.

The automaker reported that the cause of the system failure is still under investigation, although it is suspected that the malfunction was due to a system update. The company ruled out the possibility of a cyber attack.

This issue means that parts needed for production can no longer be purchased. Toyota and its suppliers use the same computer system.

The Toyota Group, which also includes commercial vehicle maker Hino Motors and small car specialist Daihatsu, has production facilities in Tokyo as well as in eight other prefectures, including Aichi and Fukuoka.

Toyota was forced to close all of its plants in March after its local supplier, Kojima Industries, suffered a system failure caused by a cyberattack. At that time, all 28 Toyota production lines at its 14 factories were affected, producing about 13,000 vehicles.

The group was also forced to temporarily shut down part of its operations in July after a cyberattack on a computer system at the port of Nagoya, a hub for Toyota, disrupted port services for two days.
