Toyota Land Cruiser 70 upgraded again – Autoreview

Long-standing and persistent rumors that Toyota is going to discontinue the ancient “seventies” can be completely forgotten. The Land Cruiser 70 SUV, produced in Japan since 1984, not only remained on the assembly line, but also gained another youth! Simultaneously with the new Prado, the upgraded Toyota Land Cruiser 70 is presented.

If we talk about appearance, then this is the second restyling for the “seventies”. The first was held in 2007, and then the classic all-terrain vehicle was made similar to the flagship Land Cruiser 200. Now the traditional look has returned – with round headlights (now they are LED), side “burdocks” of turn signals and a large inscription “TOYOTA” instead of the emblem. The plumage of the front part was completely redrawn, the nose became narrow again to highlight the front wings, almost like in the early “seventies”. The taillights are completely moved to the bumper, and plugs are installed instead of them in the body.

The humpbacked hood appeared for a reason, because under it lies the second most important new thing. The Land Cruiser 70 has gained a 2.8-liter four-cylinder 1GD-FTV turbodiesel, familiar from the Land Cruiser Prado and Hilux models. The motor produces 204 hp. and 500 Nm, and subsequently there will be a “mild hybrid” version with a 48-volt starter-alternator. And this diesel is aggregated with a six-speed “automatic”: the Land Cruiser 70 has found an automatic transmission again after almost a twenty-year break! The old four-stage “hydromechanics” was no longer installed back in 2004.

At the same time, the old V8 4.5 turbodiesel (205 hp, 430 Nm) will remain in service, paired with a five-speed “mechanics”. Regardless of the power unit, the Land Cruiser 70 has a traditional Part Time transmission with a hard-wired all-wheel drive (controlled by a mechanical lever) and two continuous axles: the engineers did not touch anything here.

But the interior has been updated, although not completely. Another combination of instruments appeared: for the first time, the screen of a trip computer with a diagonal of 4.2 inches made up the company of six arrow scales. The new media system (it is offered for a fee) has a 6.7-inch screen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto interfaces. A block with additional keys and USB connectors appeared on the center console, and a new steering wheel for the first time with buttons on the spokes.

In 2016, the “seventy” was extensively modernized to fit into modern safety standards: then a reinforced body, additional airbags and ESP appeared. Now the list of security systems has been expanded again – with the help of the front camera, the Land Cruiser 70 can follow the markings (but not steer, because the power steering is preserved), recognize signs of speed limits and automatically switch high beams.

“Seventies” will continue to be offered in four versions. This is the usual five-door station wagon (4890 mm long), three-door Troop Carrier (with benches along the sides), as well as trucks with a single-row or double-row cab. Modernization touched them all equally.

The cars will continue to be produced in Japan, with the Land Cruiser 70 returning to the home market after a long break. True, the Japanese will be able to buy only a five-door with a diesel engine and an “automatic”: sales will begin in the winter. Australia remains the main market for the model: a full range is available there, and deliveries of updated cars are expected in the fourth quarter of this year.
