Toys that threaten the reproductive system of children

The Ministry of Health of Peru warned that some toys called “Cry Babies” (crying babies) could affect the reproductive system of children. The authorities explained that inside the dolls there is bis phthalate, which exceeds the established levels.

“We are aware of a batch of ‘Cry Babys’ toys (crying babies) that could affect the health of children, causing damage to their reproductive system. due to the presence of the substance bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) at levels that exceed permitted limits“, the ministry announced in a statement.

He pointed out that the alert was issued by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and published by the National Institute for the Defense of Competition and the Protection of Intellectual Property (Indecopi), indicated EFE.

The General Directorate of Environmental Health and Food Safety (Digesa) initiated sanitary surveillance actions in the different toy marketing establishments. According to the ministry, products with characteristics similar to the toys alerted by the OECD have been found.

“Samples were taken for the corresponding technical analyzes to ensure that their use does not represent risks to the health of the population,” the statement detailed.

In addition, the ministry reported that coordination is being carried out with the OECD and Indecopi to determine if the alerted products match the toys identified during the health surveillance actions, in order to establish the corresponding security measures.

To protect the population, asked the public to “verify the current health authorization granted by the Digesa during the purchase of toys.”
