Traffic and Security Perimeters for Paris Olympic Games: How to Obtain Required Documents and Exemptions

We will have to “show our credentials”, warns Laurent Nuñez. If your home or place of work is located near one of the future Olympic sites, you will certainly be asked for documents to justify your travel to the capital. What the Paris police prefect explains to us, at the dawn of the official presentation this Wednesday of the traffic and security perimeters which will be deployed during the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Increasingly limited in the streets of the City of Lights, car space will be extremely reduced during the two periods of competition. As close as possible to stadiums, halls and other test sites, and more particularly within traffic perimeters deployed by law enforcement, priority will be given to pedestrians and cyclists. The circulation of two- and four-wheeled motorized vehicles will be completely prohibited. Unless an exemption is presented.

An online platform in spring

This authorization “concerns, for example, local residents who have parking lots, those who visit vulnerable people, emergency and rescue vehicles, recovery vehicles,” explains the Paris police chief. And of course, the convoys of athletes, delegations, journalists and event organizers. “Taxis and VTCs should be authorized there if they drop someone off there and only if they have proof. Because for us, this is a very important security zone. There will be a lot of pedestrians. There is no question of there being cars that have nothing to do there. »

Traders may also need the valuable document so that delivery vehicles can circulate within the area in question. To obtain it, “you will have to register in advance on a digital platform by providing a certain number of supporting documents, address but not only,” indicates Laurent Nuñez. This platform should be put online, at the earliest, in March 2024. “For the most vulnerable people, those who do not have access to the Internet in particular, the city of Paris has provided the possibility of obtaining a badge or proof,” adds the police prefect.

The exemptions will, however, be limited and only certain categories of people will be able to request them. A consultation is launched until mid-January between the police headquarters and Parisian economic players on this subject. A final list “must correspond to the reality of economic life”, wants to reassure Laurent Nuñez.

A QR code to present

Similar certificates, in the form of a QR code, will be necessary for local residents as well as traders located on the banks of the Seine, along which the artists of the opening ceremony will parade on July 26. Since a reinforced system, called Silt (for Internal Security and the fight against terrorism), will be deployed as close as possible to the waterway where athletes and Olympic delegations will sail. “There, the entry of vehicles will be limited to the strict minimum,” warns the prefect. The public will be everywhere, on the high platforms, the low platforms. This is a strict control perimeter, you will have to be searched. »

So, if residents want to invite friends to their home to attend the show, “you will have to register them on the platform,” adds Laurent Nuñez. This will involve a declaratory obligation which will rest on the resident with the production of the identities of the people invited. For accommodation barges (authorized, for the most part, to keep their location, Editor’s note), it will be the same principle.

Principle which he summarizes as follows: “Only people will return who have something to do there, that is to say those who return home or who return to their hotel or those who go to the ceremony because ‘They have a ticket, that’s all. »
