According to the Municipal Transportation Bureau, at around 7:20 pm on the 1st, the streetcar from Taniyama to Kagoshima Station derailed at the Korimoto tram stop intersection. There were no injuries to the 25 passengers and one driver, but due to the accident, the train between Korimoto and Taniyama was suspended from immediately after the derailment until the last train. Alternative transportation by bus was also carried out, but about 1,200 people were affected.

“I’m going to Wakita. I thought I’d walk home, but I can’t.”

“I told you to change (to an alternative bus) and there was no explanation.”

Restoration work was completed at 4:30 a.m. on the 2nd, and streetcars resumed normal operation on all lines from the first train at 6:00 a.m.

On the 26th of last month, the streetcar continued to have trouble, such as a failure to get into gear while driving, and Mayor Shimotsuru apologized at a regular press conference on the 2nd.

(Mayor of Shimotsuru City) “I am very sorry for causing great inconvenience and anxiety to passengers and citizens.”

(Reporter) “The car that derailed last night was put into this garage before 5 o’clock this morning.

A day after the accident, the derailed streetcar was placed in the Transportation Bureau. There are no major scratches or dents on the derailed wheels, but we will continue to check whether there is any impact on the vehicle.

In addition, two trains have stopped operating due to the breakdown on the 26th of last month and the accident on the 1st of this month, but there is no impact on the operation schedule so far.

The Kagoshima City Transportation Bureau believes that the cause of the derailment on the night of the 1st was that the driver overlooked the signal and moved the train forward before the track point automatically switched. A 51-year-old male driver had only five months of experience.

(Chief Tomoji Nakae, Kagoshima City Transportation Bureau Train Business Division) “The derailment occurred due to a human error caused by starting the train without checking the track signal. To prevent recurrence, not only vehicle maintenance but also the driver’s individual・I would like to conduct group training and continue to strive for safe and secure operation.”
