Tragedies in Telangana: Devastating Monsoon Rains and Flooding in Southern India

2023-07-30 22:58:24

Last Friday, local media reported that monsoon rains caused tragedies in the southern Indian state of Telangana. At least six people lost their lives, and sadly, 12 others are missing due to various weather-related incidents.

State broadcaster All India Radio (AIR) reported that the six deaths occurred in various circumstances related to heavy rainfall, while raging waters washed away 12 people at different points in the region.

Districts in the state were particularly affected by record rains including Mulugu district which recorded a bumper amount of 64.9cm of rain in just one day. On Wednesday, downpours caused floods that devastated homes and submerged roads in Mulugu and Bhupalpally districts. These floods led to the isolation of several villages, forcing rescue teams to use boats and helicopters to evacuate hundreds of people in an emergency.

Monsoon rains are an expected annual phenomenon in India between the months of June and September, as they help replenish essential water supplies. However, they are also unfortunately accompanied by loss of life, often costing the lives of hundreds of people.
