Tragedy Strikes: Deadly Riot in Tegucigalpa Women’s Prison Sparks Outrage

Tegucigalpa – Most of the 48 people killed in a riot in the women’s prison in the city of Tamara in the Central American country of Honduras died of burns. During the riots, 26 people died of burns and others were shot by the police following the jail was set on fire. 7 people are under treatment.

President Xiomarro Castro said outside gangs were unleashing the violence with the knowledge of the wardens. After the incident, the minister in charge of security and the police chief were changed. The president said the riots were staged with the help of officials to counter the government’s efforts to stamp out corruption in prisons. The government had started measures to control the criminal gangs that had been ruling the prisons with the connivance of the staff for a few months.

Honduras is notorious for prison riots. In 2012, 361 people were killed in a prison fire. In 2019, 18 people died due to clashes between the two sides.
