He literally “grabbed” fire priest Javier Sanchez, when sparks were thrown from the candles at the Easter service in Spain.
Finally the 60-year-old priest succumbed to his injuries during the Easter vigil in a monastery in the city of Zaragoza, Spain.
He suffered 50% burns and died after four days in intensive care.
It is reported that Javier Sanchez died a hero as he stood between the candle holder and the nuns to protect them.
An investigation is underway as it is believed paraffin was present to help burn the candles.
The priest was rushed to hospital, but suffered horrific injuries and despite the best efforts of doctors, later died of multi-organ failure.
Father Sanchez he presided over the “blessing of the fire” – a ritual performed during Holy Saturday service when the paschal candle is lit and remains so for 50 days until the celebration of Pentecost.
The deceased was known as the “rock priest” because of his love for music and because he had composed many songs. During his career he released three albums.
He also served as a chaplain at the Zaragoza Clinical Hospital and was also a television talk show host.
In 2015 he starred in a controversial music video for his song ‘A tu aire’, in which he appeared wearing only angel wings and a guitar, covering only the occult parts.
