The injured were taken to hospitals by 30 ambulances,” the minister wrote on social media.

According to the governor, all the dead and injured are citizens of the republic. “A total of 10 hospitals are involved in Sakarya and neighboring regions,” he said. As Karadeniz added, it is preliminary believed that the cause of the accident was dense fog. “All our services, police, emergency management, doctors, and investigators are now continuing to work on the spot. It is preliminary believed that some of the dead and injured are people who, after the first collision, went out onto the road and were hit by other cars,” he said.

The head of the Turkish Ministry of Internal Affairs, Ali Erlikaya, also said that “according to preliminary data, 10 citizens of the republic were killed and 59 were injured.”

The accident involved three buses, a truck and three other vehicles. It happened in dense fog and before sunrise, so visibility was practically zero. It is believed that the first accident occurred when a truck crashed into a passenger car, creating an emergency situation for the others involved. As Karadeniz said, some of the dead were people who, after the first collision, entered the highway and were hit by other vehicles.

The Prosecutor General’s Office of Sakarya Province has begun an investigation into the incident. According to Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunç, “three prosecutors were appointed for the investigation, who act under the leadership of the Deputy Prosecutor General.”

Currently, the road is being cleared of process fluids and debris of bodies and elements of vehicles involved in accidents. It is expected that once the cleanup is completed and specialists work at the scene, the highway will again be open to travel in the direction of Istanbul.
