A bear was run over and killed by a car overnight from Friday to Saturday on a road in Asturias, northwestern Spain, local authorities announced on “X”, formerly Twitter.
“An adult bear was run over at dawn on the AS-15 road, between Zarréu and Degaña. The occupants of the car are unharmed,” wrote the Asturian authorities on the social network, posting a photo of the brown bear lying in the grass and the car whose front is completely smashed.
The accident took place in the middle of the night, at 1:30 a.m., she adds, specifying that an autopsy would be carried out on the animal.
In Spain, some 330 brown bears live in the Cantabrian mountain range and around 76 more in the Pyrenees, according to the Brown Bear Foundation.
