A couple was recently indicted and imprisoned after the death of their 8-month-old baby in Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray, Normandy. According to the Rouen prosecutor’s office, the child died of malnutrition, as reported our colleagues from France 3 Regions.
The facts date back to April 14, when the 27-year-old father and 25-year-old mother called the emergency services because their daughter “wouldn’t wake up.[ait] not from his siesta. But once there, the firefighters could only see the death of the girl.
The report from the Rouen hospital then described a state of severe malnutrition. The other two children in the family, aged 3 years and 21 months, were also in a serious state of malnutrition and developmental delay.
An investigation was opened by the Rouen public prosecutor’s office for deprivation of care resulting in death, for the youngest child, and deprivation of care compromising health, for the two eldest.

A judicial investigation against X has also been opened for failure to assist a person in danger, so that investigations can continue on potential reporting deficiencies.
The couple’s other two children have been placed. As for the deceased baby, the autopsy confirmed that it was “severe malnutrition and excluded any traumatic cause”.
The parents, for their part, maintained that their children were regularly fed and had medical monitoring. The couple was indicted and placed in pre-trial detention in accordance with the requisitions of the prosecution.
