An eleven-month-old child died in a car in the USA. It had apparently been left alone for several hours.

A baby and a dog have died in a car in the US where they were apparently left alone for hours. A woman has been arrested. The incident occurred on Tuesday in the city of Newport News, Virginia.

The police were alerted when a man came to a hospital in the afternoon and reported that he had a dead child in the car. Emergency room employees then found a black garbage bag containing the body of an approximately eleven-month-old child, the York-Poquoson Sheriff said in a press conference.

The baby was said to have been in the care of a babysitter. The 40-year-old, who had been looking after the child for two days, was asked on the phone shortly after midnight to get something for a friend. She is caring for an elderly man and cannot leave the house. She then drove to a small supermarket, bought cigarettes and apple juice and then drove to her friend’s house. She stayed there for a long time while the child and a dog remained in the car.

At eight in the morning she drove home, closed the car windows and went to sleep – without getting the child or dog out of the vehicle, according to the police. She was woken up by a phone call around 2:30 p.m. When she then looked into the car, the child was already dead, said Sheriff Ron Montgomery.

The babysitter was arrested the same day. She is accused of child neglect and animal cruelty. The public prosecutor’s office wants to wait for an autopsy to decide whether the charge can also be expanded to include murder. According to media reports, the police did not address whether it was unusually hot.
