The body of a woman in her 70s was later discovered in a villa in Suncheon, Jeollanam-do. Her nephew, a severely disabled person in his 50s who lived with this woman, was also unable to receive care and was rescued by the police after struggling between life and death.

According to the Suncheon Police Station and the Hyangdong Administrative Welfare Center on the 7th, the police received a report from a disabled activity supporter at around 2:50 p.m. the previous day, saying, “The guardian has not been able to contact me for several days.”

After receiving the report, the police and fire authorities went to the villa in Haengjeon, Suncheon, forcibly opened the door, and found A, a woman in her 70s, dead on a bed in the house’s master bedroom. The body was in a state of decomposition, as if several days had passed. It is said that her nephew, Mr. B, in his 50s, was also lying next to her body.

Mr. B was in weakened health and was later taken to the hospital. He has a level 1 intellectual disability and a mental age of 3 to 4 years old, making it difficult for him to communicate on his own. The police believe that Mr. B was unable to properly consume water and food when Mr. A died.

It is said that the two people are aunt and nephew, and that Mr. A, who is unmarried, has been living with and taking care of Mr. B. Mr. A is not eligible for the basic old-age pension, and Mr. B is said to have been registered as a single-person household and received disability allowance.

No criminal charges, such as external intrusion or murder, were found. The police plan to request an autopsy from the National Forensic Service to confirm the cause of Mr. A’s death.

An official from the Hyangdong Welfare Center told Chosun.com, “Mr. B has now regained his strength and is able to move around,” and added, “After receiving a health checkup, he was moved to a protective facility.” The welfare center plans to contact Mr. B’s older sister, who lives in another area, and receive her consent to proceed with Mr. A’s funeral and enter the facility.
