The emergency services of Picardy Wallonia were alerted on Saturday afternoon, at 4:00 p.m., that an accident had occurred on the site of the Orient quarry, along the road from Brussels to Tournai.
A group of divers, a pumper, an SMUR, an ambulance and a command vehicle were dispatched to the scene.
The rescuers could not do anything to bring back to life a young man who was swimming before drowning in this quarry. The victim, aged 20, was swimming with two acquaintances when the tragedy occurred.
The cause of the drowning is unknown at this time. An investigation has been opened by the judicial and police authorities. “At first glance, there is nothing suspicious. It’s an accident, a tragedy. The file is at the information stage. Investigations are, however, underway. The victim is from Celles (Editor’s note: near Tournai), indicated at 5:00 p.m. Mr. Baert, 1st substitute for the king’s prosecutor of Tournai-Mons, on duty this Saturday.
It is not known whether the place where the tragedy took place was authorized for swimming.
