A major road accident on the E40, near Gistel (West Flanders), caused the death of one person on Thursday around 4:45 p.m. Another passenger, a minor, is in danger of death, said the federal police.
An earlier accident caused traffic jams on the highway towards Jabbeke (West Flanders). At the front of the line, a car hit the back of a truck. One person died and two children were taken to hospital. One of them is in danger of death.
The E40 is currently completely closed following the accident. Vehicles heading inland must leave the highway at Middelkerke. An emergency diversion will then allow them to return to the highway at Gistel. People wishing to go to Brussels from the Dunkirk region are invited to take a detour via Tournai.
The duration of the disruptions has not yet been determined. The public prosecutor’s office might send a traffic expert to the site and the lifting work will also take some time.
