The Fujian High Court in mainland China recently heard a civil case. A man fell down from a building and committed suicide because he failed to pass the establishment examination and his request for reconciliation was rejected. His parents took his ex-girlfriend to court and requested compensation of 350,000 yuan (approximately NT$1.536 million). However, under the mediation of the judge, both parties finally let go and reconciled.

According to a report by the Chinese media “Xiaoxiang Morning News”, the man surnamed Li and the woman surnamed Xu agreed to temporarily separate in July 2022 due to various factors such as family and work. Xu Nu said that if Li Nan can pass the establishment examination and be admitted by the unit as a formal employee, she will consider getting back together. Unfortunately, Li Nan was not admitted by the recruitment unit.

Xu Nu finally rejected Li Nan’s request to get back together and got a new boyfriend in February 2023. When Li Nan found out, he was heartbroken and went to Xu Nu’s residence late at night. After calling and seeking a meeting but being refused, he finally chose to commit suicide in the fire emergency exit. He died after being rescued. Afterwards, Li Nan’s parents angrily took Xu Nu to court and requested 350,000 yuan (approximately NT$1.536 million) in compensation on the grounds of infringement of the right to life.

At first, Li Nan’s mother got emotional and yelled, “She has been controlling my son mentally and financially during their relationship. She also often talks bad things about me as a mother to my son in chats, and encourages my son to leave us if he gets married. Is that true?” She caused my son to commit suicide.” The judge patiently intervened, “The deceased cannot survive, but your life must go on, and I think he is not willing to see you in court.”

In the end, both parties finally let go. The judge mentioned in an interview afterwards, “The two-month mediation work finally came to a successful conclusion after four hours of tug-of-war. The judge’s assistant, the clerk and I They all forgot about the hunger of missing lunch, felt relieved and inexplicably happy, and felt that working overtime was worth it.”

The judge bluntly said that when faced with parents who are deeply in the pain of losing a child, they feel that patient listening is the best medicine to heal the wound. Knowing how to listen during mediation is often more important than being able to speak.
