A bird, whose beak was stuck in a can and whose fate had moved many people on social networks, did not survive.

A stork was seen with its beak stuck in a can of soda on June 12 near Vesoul (Haute-Saône). Collected by the Athénas center, located in L’Etoile, in the Jura, the bird finally died, we learned this Thursday via The Republican East. The stork probably succumbed to too much weight loss.

“The stork was found in Saône-et-Loire by students who were on an outing, it was recovered and then transferred to a care center”, announced the director general of the League for the Protection of Birds (LPO) and former deputy, Matthieu Orphelin, Tuesday June 20, eight days after the broadcast of the images to find the animal.

Coca-Cola challenged by Internet users

Many Internet users, associations and media were moved by the fate of the stork, like journalist Hugo Clément, who called on Coca-Cola to help ornithologists in their research.

The firm then reacted via a press release sent to France 3 Burgundy : “It is with sadness that we learned today of the situation of the stork seen in Haute-Saône. This is a strong reminder of how much litter can harm the environment. We never want to see our packaging end up where it shouldn’t. For this particular case, but also to collaborate in the long term, we have contacted the LPO (League for the Protection of Birds)”.

In the end, Coca-Cola’s help was not necessary, thanks to the vigilance of elementary school children and the firefighters of Saône-et-Loire.

“She is very thin, she lost about half her weight, which makes us think that she spent at least 15 days without eating normally,” explained the director of the Athénas center to France 3 Bourgogne.
