Lima: 27 workers died in a fire at a gold mine in southern Peru, officials said. The incident occurred in a tunnel at the La Esperance-1 mine in the Ariquipa region.
A worker’s relative said the short circuit caused an explosion and caused the fire. The police and the public prosecutor’s office have confirmed this. Media reports that relatives have gathered near the mine to seek information about their loved ones.
According to local media, the workers were found dead at a depth of 100 meters. It is not known if anyone survived the accident. It is one of the worst mining disasters in Peru’s recent history.
