More than 2,000 people have gathered on the grounds of the Steyl missionaries. In addition to firefighters, colleagues from THW, Malteser and DLRG also came.
Representatives from local and state politics are also on site, including NRW Interior Minister Herbert Reul (CDU).
He has already given a speech, as has Sankt Augustin’s Mayor Max Leittersdorf (CDU). The head of the fire brigade also speaks at the commemoration.

Firefighters killed in motorcycle shop fire
Leittersdorf (CDU) had said in the run-up to the commemoration: “The people in the blue light family must have a place where they can express their grief and sympathy.”
The two members of the volunteer fire brigade – a man and a woman – died on June 18 during an operation. A fire broke out in a motorcycle shop for reasons that have not yet been clarified. Around 200 firefighters were involved in extinguishing the fire, two of them were then considered missing. Hours later, their bodies were recovered.

Great sympathy after the accident in Sankt Augustin
As a result of the accident, the voluntary fire brigade in Sankt Augustin received expressions of sympathy and solidarity from all over Germany. A six-figure amount has now been collected in a donation account.
