A family picnic turned into a nightmare after a 32-year-old mother was swept away by the waves as her horrified children watched as she posed with her husband on large rocks by the sea Arabia particularly agitated, in Mumbai in India.

“Mummy!” Can we hear distraught children screaming in a video captured by a witness of the sad scene, after a particularly strong wave fell on the couple.

Sadly, Jyoti Sonar, 32, was swept away despite her husband Mukesh Sonar’s attempts to catch her on June 9, The Independent reported on Monday.

“I lost my balance and we both slipped. A man held me while I grabbed my wife, but I couldn’t save her,” he allegedly complained to the local police.

The couple, who were smiling a moment earlier, had gone to the Bandra Bandstand promenade for their regular family picnic. The beach where they usually went had been restricted that day due to high tide, the British media said.

It was then that the couple would have had the idea to land on one of the large rocks to take photos.

“Jyoti followed me into the sea and we started enjoying the feeling of the water splashing on our clothes. The children were also trying to come towards us, but we restrained them as the sea was rough,” Mr Sonar reportedly told the Indian Daily.

The body of the 30-year-old was recovered dead the next day by the Mumbai coast guards, after 20 hours of searching.
