Tragic Love Affair: English Nurse’s Ill-Advised Decision Leads to Fatal Consequences

An ill-advised decision is costing English nurse Penelope Williams the disappointment of her life.

In October 2019, she joined the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board in Wrexham, the largest healthcare organization in Wales, as a Certified Hemodialysis Nurse.

An individual who has only been identified as Patient A used to attend there, to undergo frequent dialysis sessions, as required by a kidney condition from which he suffered.

Since that is Williams’ specialty, she began to treat him, but they crossed the lines and, in January 2021, they began to have a relationship.

This despite the fact that she is married and knew very well that the regulations prevented her from having such closeness with the patient.

The lovers continued with their forbidden romance, but a year later the situation would get out of hand with fatal consequences.

One night, after 10:30, they had a new clandestine meeting in the Spire private hospital parking lot, but the luck of other times did not accompany them.

Williams concluded that the man was suffering a heart attack and, despite feeling very distraught, she did not call an ambulance, which was the most appropriate, but preferred to confide her gruesome situation to a nurse friend, named in the official documents Colleague One.

The friend tried to calm Williams down, telling her to call an ambulance first and then give Patient A first aid while she arrived to help her.

Nurse Williams, however, did not call for the ambulance, but only tried to revive her half-naked lover.

When Colleague One arrived at the site, she found Patient A unconscious and decided to call the ambulance and the police immediately. Likewise, he tried to revive the patient with cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Finally, the ambulance arrived and one of the first details the paramedics noticed was that when they took him out of the car, the patient had his pants down.

After all the attempts, Patient A died, the victim of a heart attack and chronic kidney disease.

The dubious situation cast a cloak of doubt over Williams and one of the consequences was that the Nursing and Midwifery Council subjected her to a disciplinary process that has just given its results.

When the time came for her to give her version of the facts, in principle, she did not tell the truth.

Asked why she was with Patient A in that place and at that time of night, she replied that he had contacted her on Facebook asking for help because he was not feeling well.

However, Williams ended up confessing that he was having a relationship with Patient A and that they had arranged to meet that night in the parking lot of the private hospital.

He explained that, when the tragic events happened, they had been “just talking” for about 40 minutes, when the man began to complain and died.

Now, the council of her specialty has just suspended her for 18 months, under serious accusations.

Specifically, the institution said, Penelope Williams broke three rules: becoming intimately and/or sexually involved with Patient A, communicating with him on Facebook or by phone, and meeting him in a place other than the point of care.

Similarly, the council stressed that she put the patient at risk by not calling the ambulance on time.

In May of last year, the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board had fired her after making the same considerations about the case.

After a year and a half of the sanction, Williams, who is 42 years old, will have to start the application for her license as a nurse again.
