The hot night from Saturday to Sunday was deadly in Belgium. To cool off from the high temperatures of the weekend, a group of friends decided to go swimming at an old quarry in Waasmunster. Unfortunately, this night swim turned into a tragedy.
Upon entering the water, as the Nieuwsblad explains, a young man aged around twenty suddenly disappeared. Victim of thermal shock, he never returned to the surface. His friends immediately raised the alarm but the emergency services were unable to do anything.
After a few minutes of searching, the victim’s body was pulled out of the water but any help arrived too late.
His friends, in shock, were supported by the police and a victim support service.
