Back to school in elementary school is always a feverish moment filled with laughter and the joy of discovering their new teacher and their classmates, but for children in Ohio, this day has become sad and disastrous.

A school bus was traveling west on State 41 in Clark County on Tuesday when around 8:15 a.m. it was hit head-on by a Honda Odyssey van coming from the east, a highway patrol told NBC. News.

The bus then unwound from its trajectory and reversed. One of the children on the bus was killed. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. Twenty-three schoolchildren were also injured, including one seriously, reports CNN. The other little ones have minor injuries that are not life-threatening, according to law enforcement.

The bus driver suffered injuries that did not require hospital transport.

The driver of the Honda was injured, but his life is not threatened. His adult passenger was also taken to the hospital, details NBC News.

In Ohio, seat belts are not required on school buses. The children on board the crashed bus were therefore unrestrained.

The crash is still under investigation, authorities said.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, classes were canceled at Northwestern Elementary School and psychological support will be made available to anyone who needs it.
