A boy named Caleb Ziegelbaur, 14, contracted the brain-eating amoeba disease following catching an insect while swimming at the beach. This minor beat death following contracting a brain infection that has a mortality rate of 97%. This unusual event occurred in Florida.

For nearly a year, Ziegelbau was in the hospital fighting a brain-eating amoeba following contracting it while snorkeling off the beach in Port Charlotte last July.

In this regard, the doctors detected that the young man was infected by Naegleria fowleri, which is fatal in 97% of cases. Only four people out of 154 who contracted this microscopic being in the United States between 1962 and 2021 survived.

Specialists believe it entered through Caleb’s nose and infected his brain.

Finally, Caleb walks a bit, however the damage done to his brain means he needs to communicate with facial expressions and has to use a wheelchair.
