Terrible drama this Wednesday August 16 in Liège. Around 3 p.m., the Liège firefighters were called to intervene on Avenue Georges Truffaut, in the Droixhe district, for what appeared to be a work accident. According to the first information, a pole would have fallen on a person. Unfortunately, the victim did not survive.
Contacted, the Liège police quickly confirmed the facts. The Labor Auditor also confirmed the information during the afternoon on Wednesday.
A strap
Precisely, it is at the level of the construction site in progress on the urban boulevard (E25 motorway) in Droixhe that the tragedy occurred. This project aims to rehabilitate this section of motorway into an urban boulevard, peaceful, where the speed must be more moderate (at the entrance to the city) while leaving more room for soft modes (pedestrians, cyclists). It is therefore a site carried out by the Public Service of Wallonia and it is precisely a man working on behalf of the SPW who was the victim of the accident.
According to the first information transmitted by the Labor Auditor, the victim, a man, was crushed by a pylon which was being transported. It is therefore one of the straps which maintained the pylon which would have dropped, letting this heavy load fall on the worker. The latter died on the spot.
The Labor Inspectorate immediately sent a substitute on site; he was accompanied by a workplace welfare control inspector.
An investigation is now open. It must mainly determine the exact causes of this accident.
