Transformation of Baudouin Bridge: New Lights & Pedestrian/Cyclist Lane Construction in Huy

The center of Huy is under construction, that’s a fact… They’re everywhere, right bank and left bank. But also on the Baudouin bridge where, for a few days, workers have been installing new lights. LED lighting which is integrated into the freestone guardrails of the bridge. The company Genetec is in charge of the works on a budget of the electromechanical unit of the territorial Direction of the roads of Liège. Cost of the operation: approximately €160,000 VAT included.

And this is where the comments get carried away on social networks because if the bridge welcomes new lights, what will become of the pseudo-old lampposts-candelabra installed a few years ago already on the initiative of the former mayor Anne-Marie Lizin? They will simply be removed. “They had been there for about twenty years, explains acting mayor Éric Dosogne. They had been installed because Anne-Marie Lizin wanted that, just as she wanted old-style lights in the streets. It’s not just that we want to remove what she built but everything has evolved in terms of lighting. And there, we will find the lighting that was originally on the bridge.”

A cyclist/pedestrian area

The replacement of these lampposts with LEDs integrated into the railing also responds to the desire to install a cycle path on the Baudouin bridge, in order to make the connection between the RAVEL on the left bank and that on the right bank. The old lights, installed in the middle of the sidewalks, interfered with the development of a cycle space because the old lampposts take up space. “You don’t realize how much they have on the sidewalk, but they are big,” explains Éric Dosogne.

“The space available by removing the lampposts should allow us to study the possibility of transforming the current sidewalks into a shared space for cyclists/pedestrians”, explains Sarah Pierre, spokesperson for SPW Mobility and Infrastructure. The idea has been discussed at previous provincial road safety commissions. The goal is to modify the coatings of the sidewalks to reserve, with a differentiated coloring, a part for bicycles and another for pedestrians. This pedestrian/cyclist lane will be connected to the N9O right bank and to the Batta quay on the left bank via a lowering of any curbs and sidewalks.

In addition, “we must study the modification of the four corners of the bridge, creating a small cantilever to have sufficient space for each type of user in these areas which are currently too narrow.”

The file is therefore included in the RAVeL Plan of the Walloon government. And the study could start in 2024.
