Transforming Brussels: Embracing Car-Free Days for a Multimodal City Experience

2023-09-18 11:11:31

The day following Car-Free Sunday, the only one of the year in Brussels, the Minister of Mobility is pleading for more days of this type. For her, this day is very important for the people of Brussels and the feeling towards it must change. “You have to be able to enjoy the city differently“, she believes. “In Brussels, a lot of space is reserved for cars, whether in the traffic lane or in the parking lane. If we all become more multimodal, we will save space.”

And to compare the city to an apartment: “The most important room is not the hallway, but the living room. Our city is currently organized like a corridor to let cars pass. It must be organized like a living room: so that people can walk around, meet in the public space. This is what our mobility plan aims to achieve.”

So why aren’t more days organized? “In Brussels, everything is political. It is an action which is carried out in partnership with the municipalities. It is therefore necessary that the 19 municipalities participate“, explains the minister who promises to continue to fight for this.
