Transforming Food Waste into Fertilizer and Green Energy: A Guide to Europe’s Mandatory Sorting Regulations for Households, Companies, and Administrations

food waste (peelings, spoiled food, etc.) represent more than a third of our household waste. Thrown into the white bag, (in Brussels) this unsorted waste ended up in the incinerator. Big waste! But this food waste can be transformed into fertilizer and green energy.

It is to reduce our impact on the environment, and also to preserve resources that Europe imposes this sorting of food waste everywhere on its territory no later than December 31, 2023.

Orange bags and this sorting have existed since 2013 in certain Brussels municipalities. In 2017, all the Brussels municipalities got involved on a voluntary basis. But since May 15, 2023, it is an obligation for households, but also all companies and administrations.
