Transforming Lives: Innovations and Effective Treatments for Diabetes – Harfleur Site Open Day

2023-10-15 01:17:00

The Harfleur site offered visitors an open day to raise awareness of this disease which affects nearly 4 million French people. Between innovations and effective treatments, many patients find smiles and hope again.

This is the sentence dropped by Doctor Sylvaine Clavel upon our arrival: “We focus our efforts on innovations, it is through this means that we transform the lives of our patients. » Diabetes, which affects more than 5% of the French population, is a chronic disease characterized by excess sugar in the blood which leads to numerous complications. Its treatment is therefore necessary, because the resulting pathologies are severe.
The head of department of the Harfleur site, Doctor Sylvaine Clavel, accompanied by the department manager, Annie Vannier, explain this disease to us:

“There are two types of diabetes, type 1, the one that we can see in young people, not only and which prevents the production of insulin. It is therefore necessary to inject it and this is where innovation is essential since we have had hybrid systems for 3 or 4 years which have revolutionized the lives of patients. On our site, we have 250 people with these devices, we are quite simply the first in Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Type 2 diabetes is the one that produces bad insulin, here too, we have solutions, we have the molecules to regulate this problem which can lead to serious consequences, cardiovascular diseases for example. »
We understand the importance of treatments, of prevention too, always the Doctor: “Our service here is complete, it is even the last service dedicated to diabetes in France. People need to be informed, the more they are, the better. They must feel good here, in fact you can see, it doesn’t feel like a hospital. Information and innovation are our watchwords. »
So let’s discover some workshops which have been arranged on the ground floor, first and third floor. A first stop at the “new molecules” workshop, the one which explains to us the importance of innovation and we follow the visit with the “new technologies” department.
Sandrine Da Silva presents us with devices, some of which are connected, innovation at the service of medicine: “We do everything to ensure that the patient gets better and the new technology helps enormously. Here, for example, is the CAMAPS “closed loop” system, a connected device whose algorithm is embedded on your smartphone. » Closed loop because it is quite simply a circuit integrating the insulin pump, the continuous measurement of glucose and the algorithm which instantly calculates the necessary injection.
A patient, Charlène Gacon, testifies: “This system has revolutionized my life, in fact since I used the “closed loop”, I live, before I had to inject insulin every half hour. There, it is the system which calculates and doses. ” A revolution. Note that the embedded algorithm is only available on Android.
A tour through the obesity center where you will have all the keys to losing weight. You can go without necessarily going to a doctor, only your will is necessary:
“Taste instead of eating quickly, the pleasure of eating does not come from quantity but from tasting, take a square of chocolate, take the time to eat it and you will find all the necessary pleasure without finishing the entire bar. »
On the same floor is the dietetic workshop where dietitians serve patients. Julie Morrot shatters false good ideas:
“We must stop believing that a diet can fix things, just as we should just stop taking sugar, we must respect a balanced diet. » Eat better, yes, but the service also highlights other very trendy issues: “We suggest spending less and buying local while respecting the seasonality of the products. »
The dietician breaks the commonplace and advises us: “Avoid sunflower oil with your fish, it oxidizes it! Omega-3 is essential, you find it in fatty fish, but also in nuts, three in the morning is perfect. » We would stay the day at the stand…
The open door is all day long, on the Harfleur site, the old clinic.
