Transport Workers Strike Brings Germany to a Standstill

BERLIN – A strike by transport workers in Germany on Friday brought many parts of the country to a standstill. Transport workers in 15 states also participated in the strike, according to labor union Verdi. Bavaria was excluded as there were no current negotiations. Bavaria was the only state exempted from the strikes.

The state of North Rhine-Westphalia was hit hard by the strike. A third of the 90,000 workers on strike nationwide are employed in this state. The strike started between 3 am and 4 am on Friday.

The demands of the Verdi trade union include shorter working hours, more rest between individual shifts and more holidays or more holiday pay for public transport workers. The union hopes that this will reduce the burden on employees and make the job more attractive. Several flights were canceled at Hamburg Airport on Friday due to a strike by groundhandling service providers.
