A tree fell on a fence at the Planckendael animal park on Saturday morning, allowing four hyenas to briefly escape, said the spokesperson for the zoo located near Mechelen.
The park was not yet open when the tree collapsed. Mechelen police responded to the scene.
The hyenas’ caretakers were able to quickly determine where they were, the spokesperson said. The animals quickly returned to their enclosure.
After a thorough inspection, the park was able to open its gates at 10:00 a.m. as scheduled.
