The consumers of these products believed to promote weight loss will have to do without. The ANSM (National Medicines Safety Agency) has taken a “health policy decision in order to suspend the marketing of these products“, according to a press release (source 1). The reason? Many serious side effects have been reported.
What products are affected?
These are three Trex brand products, on sale on the internet, social networks, and in physical stores:
- Trex Tea (poudre),
- Trex Caps (capsules),
- Trex Plus (effervescent form)
Twenty people who consumed one of these products have indeed suffered heart rhythm disorders, hypertension, tachycardia, chest pain, dizziness, or even epileptic seizures. The ANSM specifies that “other European states are also reporting similar alerts”.
Two medicinal substances found in the products
The analyzes revealed the presence of two drug substances which however do not appear in the composition: the sibutraminea treatment against obesity banned by the ANSM in 2010, and the sildenafil, the active ingredient of Viagra. In an interview for France InfoDr. Christelle Ratignier-Carbonneil, Director General of the ANSM, affirmed that “it is these two molecules which cause these undesirable effects. The two components in question: sibutramine and sildenafil do not appear in the list of components. We are therefore of course falsification” (source 2). The products, presented as food supplements intended for weight loss, should not have contained active substances, reserved for drugs which require specific marketing authorization.
What if you consume these products?
Accordingly, “the manufacture, import, use, export, wholesale distribution, placing on the market free of charge or against payment, holding with a view to sale or distribution free of charge and of “Trex Tea”, “Trex Cap” and “Trex Plus” products are suspended”.
The ANSM asks people holding these products to do not use themand of in the event of a serious adverse reaction, contact a poison control center or 15. More generally, dietary supplements should be taken with vigilance, on the advice of a health professional.
