Trish Austin, 62, Dies at Her Home in Rule

Patricia Gail Austin, known to her community simply as Trish, spent decades anchoring the small town of Rule, Texas, behind the chair of her beauty shop, across the pews of her church, and at the center of a sprawling family. She died on October 31, 2026, at the age of 62, leaving behind a husband, six children, sixteen grandchildren, and a network of neighbors who regarded her shop as a sanctuary.

A Life Built on Hard Work and Open Doors

She worked as a farmer, a teacher, and a hairdresser, balancing physical labor with domestic life and deep community involvement. When her children—Grant, Becky, Jenny, Doug, Luke, and Kayla—were young, she volunteered extensively at their local school and church.

Her working life shifted when she transitioned from styling hair at home to opening a permanent storefront in Rule. That salon chair quickly evolved into more than a place for haircuts. Patrons arrived to talk, air their grievances, and seek counsel. Trish offered honesty paired with unconditional regard, often welcoming strangers and troubled children into her orbit as though they were her own flesh and blood. At one point, she ran a children’s home, translating her personal ethos of care into structural support for youth in need.

Faith, Family, and the Challenge of Illness

Despite financial hardships that often left resources scarce, Trish maintained a steady rhythm of giving. She regularly contributed what she could to her church and to missions, read her Bible daily, and found solace in her favorite hymn, “It Is Well with My Soul.” When she wasn’t counseling neighbors or tending to her family alongside her husband, Gene, she created intricate beaded art and listened to her sister Marilyn play the piano.

That industrious, fast-paced life slowed when multiple sclerosis (MS) altered her physical capabilities. Yet the diagnosis did not diminish her presence in the lives of her large family—including her sisters Marilyn Simpson and Frieta Boyce, sister-in-law Sarah Stewart, and her sixteen grandchildren: Eloise, Connie, Violet, Tex, Beatrice, Kacie, Nathan, Kameron, Krue, Molli, Nash, Tilar, Miles, Kyla, Killian, and Keenan.

Family, friends, and community members will gather to honor her life on Tuesday, November 3, 2026. A funeral service is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Rule, Texas, with arrangements under the care of Smith Family Funeral Homes of Rule. Cremation will follow the service.
