Ed Gallrein, a third-generation farmer and former state legislator, defeated U.S. Rep. Thomas Massie in Kentucky’s Republican primary for the 4th Congressional District on Tuesday, according to unofficial results. The race, which drew national attention as a test of former President Donald Trump’s influence within the party, saw Gallrein secure 54% of the vote to Massie’s 46%. Massie, a seven-term incumbent and vocal critic of Trump’s 2020 election claims, had positioned himself as a moderate voice in a state increasingly aligned with the former president’s policies.
Gallrein, who ran under the endorsement of Trump and the Tea Party Patriots, framed his campaign around agricultural policy and economic nationalism. His victory aligns with a broader pattern of Trump-aligned candidates unseating establishment figures in primary elections this cycle. Massie, meanwhile, had faced pressure from conservative activists for his past opposition to Trump’s agenda, including his skepticism of the former president’s rhetoric on election integrity and his support for the 2021 Capitol riot commission.
The primary was part of a wave of contests across six states, including Idaho, Montana and South Carolina, where Trump-backed candidates sought to consolidate control over GOP primaries. In Kentucky, the race highlighted tensions within the party over its direction, with Gallrein’s win signaling a shift toward more overtly pro-Trump candidates. Massie’s campaign had argued that his record on fiscal conservatism and limited government made him the better choice for the district, which includes rural communities reliant on federal agricultural subsidies.
Massie, who has served since 2013, did not immediately comment on the result. Gallrein, who previously ran for governor in 2023, is expected to face a Democratic challenger in the general election, though the race remains a longshot for either party. The outcome also underscores the growing influence of Trump’s network in shaping primary outcomes, as the former president’s endorsements have become a decisive factor in Republican primaries nationwide.
The Kentucky primary followed similar contests in other states, where Trump-backed candidates secured victories in races ranging from congressional seats to state governorships. Analysts noted that the results reflect a broader realignment within the GOP, with candidates increasingly prioritizing loyalty to Trump over traditional conservative principles. Gallrein’s win, however, also raises questions about the viability of moderate Republicans in a party increasingly defined by its alignment with the former president’s policies.
