Trump Banner at Justice Dept. Fuels Concerns Over Political Interference

by Alexandra Hartman Editor-in-Chief

WASHINGTON – A large banner featuring former President Donald Trump was hung on the exterior of the U.S. Justice Department headquarters on Thursday, igniting a firestorm of criticism and raising concerns about the department’s independence. The display, featuring Trump’s image and the slogan “Make America Safe Again,” is being viewed by many as a deliberate attempt to exert influence over an agency that once investigated him, and continues to be the subject of scrutiny under his administration.

The placement of the banner marks a significant departure from tradition, as the Justice Department has historically maintained a degree of separation from political influence. This move, coupled with ongoing investigations into perceived political opponents, has amplified anxieties about the potential weaponization of the department. The incident underscores a broader pattern of actions that critics say demonstrate a disregard for the established norms of impartiality within the nation’s legal system.

Attorney General Pam Bondi has publicly aligned herself with the former president, a stance that contrasts sharply with her predecessors who prioritized maintaining an arms-length distance from the White House. The Justice Department released a statement Thursday stating it is proud to “celebrate 250 years of our great country and our historic work to make America safe again at President Trump’s direction,” NBC News reported.

Similar banners have appeared at other federal agencies, including the Department of Labor and the Department of Agriculture, each bearing a different slogan. The banner at the Department of Labor reads “American workers first,” while the one at the Department of Agriculture states “growing America.”

Erosion of Independence and Ongoing Investigations

The decision to display the banner at the Justice Department is particularly striking given the department’s recent history. In 2022, then-Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed Jack Smith as special counsel to investigate Trump’s handling of classified documents and his efforts to overturn the 2020 election. However, those cases were ultimately abandoned in 2024 after Trump won reelection, citing a long-standing Justice Department policy against prosecuting sitting presidents. The Associated Press detailed the context of this shift.

Beyond the handling of the cases against Trump, the Justice Department has also opened investigations into several individuals perceived as political adversaries. These include former FBI Director James Comey, Fresh York Attorney General Letitia James, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, and several Democratic representatives who publicly urged service members to resist any unlawful orders. These actions have fueled accusations that the department is being used to retaliate against Trump’s critics.

Federal prosecutors initially brought charges against James and Comey, but those cases were later dismissed after a U.S. District Judge, Cameron McGowan Currie, determined the prosecutor appointed to the cases had been illegally appointed at Trump’s urging.

Reaction and Concerns

The banner has drawn sharp criticism from various quarters. Comey himself described the display as “sickening to see” in a social media post, noting that the administration “forgot to cover the inscription” on the building that reads, “Where law ends tyranny begins.” CNN reported on the immediate backlash.

The move also comes as President Trump is reportedly seeking $230 million in compensation from the Justice Department for what he claims were wrongful prosecutions, a demand that has reportedly made some Republican senators uncomfortable, The Hill reported this week.

What’s Next

The display of the banner is likely to continue to fuel debate over the independence of the Justice Department and the extent to which political considerations are influencing its actions. The ongoing investigations into Trump’s perceived enemies, coupled with the department’s defense of its actions as part of a broader effort to “make America safe again,” suggest that this tension is unlikely to dissipate anytime soon. The coming months will be critical in determining whether the Justice Department can restore public trust and reaffirm its commitment to impartiality.
