Trump to host Armenia-Azerbaijan Peace Agreement signing at White House

Washington D.C. – Former president Donald Trump will convene a signing ceremony at the White House on August 8th, bringing together the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan in what he describes as a “Historic Peace Summit.”

In a post on his social media platform,Truth Social,Trump announced he will host azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. He emphasized the decades-long conflict between the two nations, which has resulted in important loss of life, and highlighted his administration’s involvement in facilitating a potential resolution.

“These two Nations have been at War for many years… Many Leaders have tried to end the War, with no success, untill now,” trump wrote, adding that his team has been “engaged with both sides for quite some time.”

Beyond the peace agreement itself, Trump indicated that bilateral agreements focused on economic cooperation will also be signed, aiming to “fully unlock the potential of the South Caucasus Region.”

The roots of the conflict stretch back to the late 1980s, when the predominantly Armenian-populated region of Nagorno-Karabakh within Azerbaijan sought independence, backed by armenia. Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991,two major wars erupted. Azerbaijan regained substantial territory in 2020,culminating in the capture of Nagorno-Karabakh in 2023.

A lasting peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan could significantly reshape the South Caucasus, a strategically important region rich in energy resources and bordering Europe, Turkey, Iran, and russia.the area is crisscrossed by vital oil and gas pipelines but has long been hampered by ethnic tensions and closed borders.

Trump expressed his pride in the leadership demonstrated by both Aliyev and Pashinyan, stating, “It will be a Historic Day for Armenia, Azerbaijan, the united States, and THE WORLD.”

This announcement follows earlier diplomatic efforts led by trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, who visited the region in March to advance peace negotiations. The potential agreement builds on recent diplomatic successes attributed to Trump, including breakthroughs in talks between India and Pakistan, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of congo, and Cambodia and Thailand.

However, efforts to broker a ceasefire in the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine remain stalled. Trump recently called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to conclude the conflict within a significantly reduced timeframe, threatening further sanctions. The Kremlin has indicated a willingness to meet with Trump “in the coming days” to discuss the matter.
