Trump Indicted for Handling of Classified Documents: Impact on His 2024 Presidential Bid

Washington.- Donald Trump said Thursday that he was indicted in the federal investigation for his handling of classified documents after leaving the White House, a new legal setback that threatens his bid for a second term in 2024.

“The corrupt Biden administration informed my lawyers that I was indicted, apparently for the hoax of the boxes,” he wrote on his Truth Social network, revealing a historic first for being the first former or sitting US president to face federal charges.

The Justice Department did not immediately confirm Trump’s announcement, despite reports in local media, such as The New York Times, which cited sources that factually affirmed the accusation against the former president.

In his publication, Trump, who is aspiring to win the Republican Party’s candidacy for the 2024 presidential elections, assured that he was summoned to appear before a federal court in Miami on Tuesday.

“I never thought something like this could happen to a former president of the United States,” he wrote.

The Republican’s announcement comes a day after US media reported that federal prosecutors informed the former president’s lawyers that he was under investigation for his handling of classified documents.

Trump was already the first ex-president or sitting president to be indicted for a crime – for paying a porn star to keep quiet about a relationship with him before the election – by the Manhattan district attorney.

It was unclear Thursday exactly what Trump is accused of in the documents case. The former president, who turns 76 next week, has consistently denied that he acted illegally.

Special Counsel Jack Smith, appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland, is investigating classified files that Trump kept at his Mar-a-Lago residence after leaving the White House.

The FBI found some 11,000 pages in August after raiding Trump’s home. The former president could face obstruction of justice charges after spending months resisting the recovery of these documents.

Finally, Trump delivered 15 boxes of about 200 classified documents to the National Archives in January of last year.

-More legal problems-Investigators have recorded several attempts to obstruct his work to recover the documents and obtain video from a security camera near a storage room at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence, where he kept the files.

“I don’t know anything about that. All I know is this: everything I did was correct,” the former president said on June 1 at an event hosted by Fox News.

However, Trump has openly admitted that he took and kept the documents. His lawyers recommended that he say that he inadvertently took these files in the midst of a chaotic exit from the White House.

In addition to these two accusations, the former president faces numerous investigations as he challenges Democratic President Joe Biden in the 2024 presidential race.

Smith is also investigating Trump’s role in the 2021 attack on the Capitol by a mob of Trump supporters. While Georgia prosecutors seek to determine if he tried to illegally annul the results of the 2020 presidential elections.

The former president has already been accused of dozens of financial crimes for paying a porn actress who claims to have had a relationship with him. The trial in this case is scheduled for March, in the middle of the primary election period.
