Trump suffers his first primary defeat in Washington DC

Two days before “Super Tuesday”, ex-President Donald Trump lost out for the first time in the primary elections of the opposition Republicans: In the preliminary round in the capital Washington DC on Sunday, his challenger Nikki Haley prevailed with 63 percent of the vote, several US reported -Media. Haley secured all 19 delegate votes in the capital district.

Washington DC is considered a stronghold of US President Joe Biden’s Democrats. Trump’s Republicans have no chance in elections there. The result is therefore considered to be unrepresentative of the rest of the country. However, Haley had consistently performed better in the past primaries than polls predicted.

Only on Saturday did Trump win the primaries in the Republican strongholds of Missouri and Idaho. Before that, he had won six primaries, including in Haley’s home state of South Carolina. Elections will take place in North Dakota on Monday before more than a dozen states hold their primaries on Super Tuesday. Trump currently has 247 delegate votes, Haley has 43. 1,215 votes are required for the nomination at the party convention in July.
