The Midterm Strategy in Dallas
Republicans are convening at the American Airlines Center in Dallas on Wednesday as they attempt to convince Americans to vote for a party led by an embattled president who has overseen inflation and led the US into an increasingly unpopular war. Donald Trump will dominate the program, appearing on both nights as the GOP works to cling to its slender control of the House of Representatives.
The Republican National Committee (RNC), which is organizing the convention, plans to place the president at the center of the event despite approval ratings hovering at about 38%. RNC Chairman Joe Gruters stated that the program would attempt to demonstrate how Republicans are “lowering costs, securing our border, making our communities safer, and putting American workers and families first.”
Defections and Financial Hurdles
In a sign of Trump’s toxicity among vulnerable lawmakers, some Republicans have said they will not attend the Dallas event, risking the potential ire of the president while avoiding a public association with a deeply unpopular leader. Representatives facing close re-election bids have proved particularly likely to dodge the convention, mindful that their Democratic opponents are looking for any opportunity to tie them to Trump.
Among those stating they would bypass a trip to Texas are Zach Nunn, who is fighting a close contest in Iowa, and Tom Barrett, who is engaged in a tight re-election battle in Michigan. Axios reported that only about 100 lawmakers and candidates are expected to attend. Additionally, multiple reports indicated that House Republicans were being asked to donate at least $25,000 to the party to secure a ticket.
JD Vance, former White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, and Ken Paxton—the Republican candidate for Senate in Texas who remains tied in the polls with Democrat James Talarico in a state that has not sent a Democrat to the Senate since 1988—are confirmed to be in attendance.
Democratic Counter-Programming
Democrats have traveled to Dallas to counter the convention’s narrative. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker joined a Texas Democratic Party event on Wednesday and accused Republicans stumping for Trump of “bootlicking,” while House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries announced that a contingent of Democrats would counter what they termed falsehoods and extremism on Thursday.
Forecasters give Republicans a slim chance of holding the House, while Democrats are increasingly hopeful about picking up Senate seats that could stymie Trump’s aims during his final two years in office.
Unresolved questions remain over whether voters will respond to the Republican pitch amid rising costs, as party members prepare for the final stretch of the midterm campaign.
