Trump to Lift Sanctions on Turkey and Reopen F-35 Fighter Jet Access

US President Donald Trump announced plans to lift sanctions on Turkey and reopen the possibility of Ankara acquiring F-35 fighter jets following a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The decision has drawn sharp opposition from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who warned that advanced military sales to Turkey could disrupt the regional balance.

Sanctions Relief and the F-35 Program

The original deal and Turkish participation were cancelled during the first term of the Trump administration after Ankara purchased the Russian defense platform in 2017, prompting the US to enact penalties under the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA) in 2020.

US officials previously argued that the Russian equipment could compromise sensitive intelligence and technological data tied to the stealth aircraft. During a visit to Ankara featuring a warm airport greeting by the Turkish leadership, the US president signaled that those restrictions have run their course.

US President Donald Trump stated that they were lifting the sanctions and explained that he did not want President Erdogan to waste his time answering that question because they were working very closely with Marco Rubio, Scott Bessent, Pete Hegseth, and everybody else.

He added that Washington prefers not to penalize close diplomatic partners when other targets are available.

US President Donald Trump stated that they did not want to put sanctions on their friends, emphasizing that that was all it was and noting that while there were a lot of people they could put sanctions on, they did not want to do so to their friends.

Regional Objections from Israel and Washington

The prospect of advanced American military hardware returning to Turkish hands has triggered immediate concern in Tel Aviv, where officials argue that giving Turkey access to stealth capabilities could destabilize regional air power. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu questioned the reliability of Ankara as a cooperative security partner in an interview with CNN.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that he was not an ideal ally of the United States.

Netanyahu expanded on those concerns during a separate appearance on Fox & Friends, pointing to Turkish foreign policy positions, territorial ambitions regarding Cyprus, pressure on Greece, and ties to Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan countered by describing Israeli policies as a burden on humanity that can no longer be carried.

The debate extends inside American political circles as well. Former US Vice President Mike Pence voiced opposition to reversing the restrictions, arguing that restoring Turkey’s access to the advanced fighter platform would compromise the security of the United States, Israel, and the wider NATO alliance.

Strategic Value of the Aircraft

The controversy centers on the unique operational profile of the aircraft itself. Commentary published by The Jerusalem Post emphasized that the platform is far more than a standard tactical fighter, functioning instead as an integrated network for intelligence collection and stealth warfare.

The Jerusalem Post, via Zee News, reported that the F-35 was not only another fighter jet, but a strategic military platform.

With Israel currently serving as the sole operator of the F-35 in the Middle East, any expansion of the program to include neighboring regional powers directly alters the balance of strategic deterrence. As discussions on lifting the CAATSA penalties proceed, policymakers must weigh the diplomatic rewards of easing pressure on Ankara against the friction it creates among long-standing regional allies.
