Trump won New Hampshire primary

According to consistent US media reports and research institutes, former US President Donald Trump won the primary election in New Hampshire. It was initially unclear on Wednesday night how big his lead would be over his remaining serious rival Nikki Haley.

After a quarter of the votes were counted, he was at 55 percent and the former governor at 43.5 percent, according to data provider Edison Research. According to the statistics website FiveThirtyEight, Trump was ahead by around 17 percentage points in the last polls before the vote.

If the early information is confirmed, Trump would have failed in his attempt to make a clear preliminary decision in the second vote of the primaries. Haley’s campaign team announced while voting on Tuesday that she would remain in the race at least until Super Tuesday on March 5th. Then elections will take place in 16 of the 50 states and around a third of the delegate votes will be distributed.

“The race is far from over, there are still dozens of states ahead of us,” said Nikki Haley on Tuesday evening (local time) in Concord. “I’m a fighter.” She congratulated Trump on his victory in New Hampshire, but added that a second term for her rival would only bring chaos to the country. The 52-year-old once again asked her rival, who was 25 years her senior, to take part in a TV debate and questioned his sanity.

According to forecasts, US President Joe Biden has won the primary election for his party’s presidential nomination in New Hampshire. However, his success is more of a symbolic nature – because the delegate votes secured in the state will not be taken into account at the Democratic nomination convention in the summer. Biden, who wants to run for a second term as president in November, was not on the ballot in the primary election on Monday evening. Nevertheless, voters had the opportunity to enter his name. Biden’s supporters campaigned for votes primarily for image reasons so as not to leave the president looking blank.

The background is an internal dispute among the Democrats: the party leadership actually wanted to move the start of the primary election series to South Carolina – to a state with a more diverse electorate, in order to give the votes of black voters a larger stage. The vote there doesn’t take place until February 3rd. New Hampshire didn’t want to lose its status as the first primary election state and insisted on its early voting date. Biden stuck to the party line and did not get on the ballot in New Hampshire. Only largely unknown candidates who had no chance were listed there. As the incumbent, Biden has no serious competition in the Democratic primaries.

The actual presidential election will take place at the beginning of November. Trump and Biden are actually tied in polls.
