TSMC reportedly having trouble producing 3nm chips

Getting ready to launch the first line of iPhones with processors manufactured in a process of 3 nanometersa Apple may be facing problems in relation to the production of chips, headed by its partner Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC).

According to a report by the EE Timesthe Taiwanese company would be having difficulties both in tools for production and in yield – which is the amount of high-quality chips that are produced in relation to total production.

According to experts, this would be affecting the production in large volumes of chips with such technology — known to be the “A17 Bionic” (which will equip the “iPhones 15 Pro/15 Pro Max”) and the “M3” (which will equip some of the Macs that will be released later this year).

According to analyst Brett Simpson, the current yield estimate is 55%. Although this number is lower than expected, however, it is understandable given the complexity of working with the new technology in its early stages.

It is expected to grow as the company improves and optimizes its manufacturing processes — according to Simpson, the expectation is that there will be an increase in yield of 5 percentage points each quarter.

In any case, the report that indicates yield problems in relation to 3nm chips goes somewhat in the opposite direction of the recent news that Apple guaranteed 100% of chip production with TSMC technology. This is because the performance considered “better than expected” would have been one of the reasons that made Apple invest heavily in the manufacturer’s chip production line.

A good performance was also pointed out by the CEOChief executive officeror executive director.”>1 from TSMC, CC Wei, last week, when he said the big problem is the high demand for chips, which exceeds the company’s current supply capacity.

If it depends on Apple, such demand will only tend to increase, since even the probable future 5G modem that the company plans to manufacture should be built on TSMC’s 3nm process — one of the biggest partners of the American company today.
