TSMC starts mass production of 3nm chips in Taiwan

The increased focus on TSMC’s increased investment in the US led the company to hold a launch ceremony for a new production line at the Tainan Technopark in the southwest of the island, where 3nm products have been mass-produced, but 5nm chips will also be produced next door. At the same time, it was announced that the production of 2-nm products for the first time in the world will be mastered by the company also in Taiwan.

According to information Nikkei Asian Review, Chairman of the Board of Directors of TSMC Mark Liu during the ceremony stressed that $ 60.4 billion was spent on the construction of a new enterprise in Tainan, where mass production of 3-nm chips was mastered, which is one and a half times more than the company’s planned construction costs two factories in the US state of Arizona. The second of the plants under construction in the US will be able to launch production of 3-nm products no earlier than 2026, if everything goes according to plan.

Taiwan construction has attracted 23,500 construction jobs and will create about 10,000 high-tech jobs. In the next ten years, according to Mark Liu, semiconductor components will only increase their influence in the global economy. For the first time, TSMC’s intentions to build enterprises in Taiwan, which will be engaged in the production of 2-nm products in the future, were confirmed from the lips of the management. Two specialized enterprises will be built in several stages in the central part of the island in Taichung and in the north in Hsinchu. The scale of investments in these enterprises and the timing of the start of production of 2-nm products have not yet been specified.

Taiwan Vice Premier Shen Jong-chin, who was present at the ceremony, felt it necessary to say that rumors about TSMC’s desire to move production off the island have no basis. Mark Liu added that within five years, the market capacity of products that will use 3-nm chips will grow to $1.5 trillion. Competitor Samsung Electronics Starts Making 3nm Products for Customers in June this year, but it is generally accepted that they have a relatively simple structure and are inferior in terms of their technological complexity to the components that TSMC began producing in 3nm technology this month. Formally, the company kept its own promise to master the production of 3-nm products in the second half of 2022.
