Tua Tagovailoa returned to South Florida on Friday night as an Atlanta Falcon to face his former Miami Dolphins teammates at Hard Rock Stadium, receiving a cold reception from a sparse crowd that met him with boos.
The preseason matchup marked the first time Tagovailoa and the Dolphins were at the same place at the same time since an offseason divorce that ended a tumultuous six-season tenure. Selected fifth overall by Miami in 2020, Tagovailoa was paid like a top-five quarterback in 2024 but struggled with injuries and inconsistent coaching, failing to secure his goal of becoming the undisputed face of the franchise.
The Exit and Financial Aftermath
The parting of ways came at a heavy financial cost. The Dolphins released Tagovailoa during the offseason despite remaining on the hook for approximately $55 million of his salary. The move was part of a systematic divestment from talent designed to alleviate salary cap constraints left by the previous administration. In response, the franchise entered a full rebuild under head coach Jeff Hafley and quarterback Malik Willis, leaving the roster significantly depleted as it prepares for the upcoming season.
Quarterback Competition in Atlanta
Following his release, Tagovailoa signed a one-year deal with the Atlanta Falcons, where he entered a training camp battle for the backup role behind Michael Penix Jr. Penix, the eighth overall selection in the 2024 NFL draft, missed preseason action while recovering from a 2025 knee surgery, leaving Tagovailoa to compete largely against himself for much of the camp before Penix was fully cleared to practice.
During Friday night’s exhibition game, Tagovailoa played efficiently on limited snaps, completing 7 of 8 passes for 95 yards, though his performance included a fumbled snap from center that the Dolphins defense recovered. The quarterback’s efforts drew a split reaction from fans on social media, with some criticizing the hostile reception given a player who earned a Pro Bowl nod, finished in the top ten of MVP voting, and played through significant injuries, while others defended the fans’ right to express frustration over the team’s postseason droughts.
The Falcons have not yet officially named their Week 1 starter as the preseason draws to a close.
