Crea-SP signs a partnership with APS to support the feasibility of the Santos-Guarujá tunnel

With the works scheduled for 2024, the Santos-Guarujá tunnel project now receives new support to get off the ground. The Regional Council of Engineering and Agronomy of the State of São Paulo (Crea-SP) signed, this Thursday (20/07), a technical cooperation partnership with the Port Authority of Santos (APS) to help make the dry connection between the cities possible through the submerged tunnel that has been expected for about 90 years.

The project, which has been considered one of the greatest works by the Federal Government, consists of an 860-meter stretch of tunnel under the sea. The connection to the channel is currently made by ferry, which interrupts port activity, or by land, requiring travel of more than 40 kilometers by road.

Signing of the technical cooperation term for the Santos-Guarujá Tunnel took place this Thursday (07/20)

“The Santos-Guarujá tunnel is going to happen and it is our option, as professionals in the technological area, to make it happen. Through the term signed today, we make the Council available, with all the human material and technical capacity of the engineers, agronomists, geoscientists and technologists that make up our System, to help in the execution of this solution”, said the president of Crea-SP, Engineer Vinicius Marchese.

Santos-Guarujá Tunnel will make life easier for 80,000 people

The impact of the work, estimated at R$ 5 billion, according to the project’s analyses, will be social, environmental and economic, as the tunnel should facilitate the logistical and transport flow of the Port of Santos. “We want to resolve the lives of the 80,000 people who cross this channel daily and the more than 10,000 trucks that arrive at the port every day”, commented the CEO of APS, Anderson Pomini. According to the lawyer, of the total number of trucks transporting cargo in the region, around 2,500 need to use the highways, increasing carbon dioxide emissions, which led to Santos and Guarujá being classified as critical cities in terms of air quality. “All the data justify the implementation of this work”, added Pomini.

Crea-SP report

Identified as an alternative in Crea-SP diagnostic report of Crea-SP – handed over to the State Government in February this year – which mapped the bottlenecks in the integration between the waterway, road and rail systems in state logistics and infrastructure, the project has as a reference the largest submerged tunnel in the world, which, once completed, will be 18 km long, connecting Denmark and Germany under the Baltic Sea. “The participation of engineers to update the Santos-Guarujá project is vital, as it is an absolutely innovative work for Brazilian engineering”, pointed out the director-president of APS.

With the partnership, the Council participates in effective solutions for the Santos-Guarujá tunnel, considering the guidance and preventive supervision of the professional practice of engineers, agronomists, geoscientists and technologists who, perhaps, will work in the management, installation or port infrastructure, as well as in the services covered, with the objective of protecting society from possible damages arising from professional action in non-compliance with the legislation or with the required ethics and promoting better state development. The exchange of information in all processes related to the execution of works is also part of the signed term.
