The leader of the Tunisian Islamist party “Ennahdha”, Rached Ghannouchi, was sentenced on Monday to one year in prison by a Tunis court specializing in terrorism cases.
The former speaker of the dissolved parliament (81) was sentenced to one year in prison and a thousand dinars (about 320 dollars) in fines in the case of a complaint accusing him of having called the security forces “tyrants “, thus report the local media.
As part of this case, the leader of the Islamist movement appeared, without being imprisoned, in February 2022 before the counter-terrorism judicial pole.
Main figure of the opposition in Tunisia, Ghannouchi had been arrested on April 17 and placed under arrest warrant following declarations in which he had affirmed that Tunisia would be threatened with a “civil war”, in the event of elimination political parties from the left or from political Islam like Ennahda.
Rached Ghannouchi’s troubles, both with power and justice, have multiplied since July 25, 2021. In July 2022, he was also questioned on suspicion of corruption and money laundering linked to transfers of funds from abroad to a charity affiliated with Ennahda.
In early February, Tunisia experienced a series of arrests of politicians, opposition figures, civil society activists, media officials and trade unionists, prompting a wave of outrage from several NGOs in defense of human rights.
These arrests, denounced locally and internationally, targeted leading political figures of the National Salvation Front and its main component, the Islamist party Ennahdha.
“Human Rights Watch” (HRW) denounced attempts to “dismantle” the Tunisian “Ennahda” party, calling for an end to reprisals against the Islamist movement and for the release of all those “arbitrarily detained” in the wake of this offensive.
In a statement, the office of HRW in Tunis deplored the intensification of the offensive against political opponents in Tunisia and the efforts made by the authorities to neutralize Ennahda, the largest political party in the country.
