You fulfilled your mission as a member of the Mexican delegation in the search and rescue of our brothers in Turkey. Thank you for your heroic work,” the Department of Defense announced on Sunday.

The circumstances of Proteo’s death, which occurred early Sunday morning, are unclear. According the mexican pressthe animal was searching for victims when rubble collapsed on top of it.

On TikTok, the Mexican Defense Secretariat released a poignant video showing the injured animal, then its trainer bidding farewell. “I want to tell you that I’m proud of you, because you’ve always been a strong dog, a hardworking dog, because you never gave up. Now, I can only thank you (…) I will always remember you (…) One day, we will meet again”, he assures her, visibly very moved.

The Mexican Foreign Ministry also mourned Proteo’s death. “I regret the sensitive death of Proteo, a member of the rescue team in Turkey. He carried high the name of Mexico and our people”, reacted on Twitter, Marcelo Ebrard, Secretary of External Relations.

On Sunday, members of the Mexican Brigade honored the dog in a ceremony.
