The USA and Turkey want to better coordinate their military actions in the Syria conflict region in the future.

Turkey attacked positions in Syria belonging to the Kurdish Workers’ Party (PKK), which has been banned as a terrorist organization, on Thursday.

One of the drones used was shot down by US soldiers because it came dangerously close to them.

The NATO allies report that such misunderstandings should be prevented in the future.

On Thursday, the US shot down a Turkish drone in Syria. Turkey has the misunderstanding attributed to contradictory assessments of the situation. The Foreign Ministry in Ankara announced on Friday that military officers from both sides assessed the situation differently within the framework of an agreed “conflict avoidance mechanism”. The necessary steps are being taken to handle the mechanism more effectively in the future. The ministry did not provide any details.

The US Department of Defense said on Thursday that the Turkish drone came within 500 meters of US soldiers in Syria. They were forced to seek safety in bunkers when Turkey bombed nearby targets. Commanders classified the drone as a threat and had it shot down by a fighter jet.

No evidence of a deliberate attack

The drone was shot down for reasons of duty of care and the right to self-defense, said Pentagon spokesman Patrick Ryder. He spoke of an unfortunate incident and said there was no evidence that Turkey intentionally attacked the US soldiers.

According to the government, Turkey has attacked positions in Syria belonging to the Kurdish Workers’ Party (PKK), which is banned as a terrorist organization. The Foreign Ministry emphasized that the shooting down of the drone did not affect the operation. According to Kurdish sources, eleven people were killed in an attack on Thursday evening in northeastern Syria.

The American and Turkish militaries, which are NATO allies, usually coordinate their operations in the region. The US has stationed around 900 soldiers in Syria to combat fighters from the Islamic State terrorist group.
